Health Literacy 710 - Fall Quarter 2008

The Institute of Medicine's 2004 report on Health Literacy:  A Prescription to End Confusion, states "If patients cannot comprehend needed health information, attempts to improve the quality of care and reduce health care costs and disparities may fail."

Low health literacy is a major public health problem in the 21st century.

Health Literacy 710 will examine and analyze issues of low health literacy, including populations at risk; research; measurement tools; writing in plain language; health communication techniques; and organizational approaches to meeting the challenges.  This elective course is a 3 credit hour course for graduate students in the health professions colleges and the Arts & Sciences Literacy Specialization Program through the College of Arts and Sciences.  It is cross-listed for the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and School of Allied Medical Professions.
