ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Mary McIlroy, MD ‘75
Dr. Mary McIlroy graduated from the Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1975 and completed her residency in pediatrics at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. She joined the faculty in the Department of Pediatrics in 1979, where she currently holds an appointment as Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics. At Children’s, Dr. McIlroy is Director of Pediatric Education, Research and Evaluation, a position she has held since 1983. In addition, she is the Assistant Medical Director of Education and has directed the eight-week pediatric clerkship and coordinated all the departmental educational offerings. Since 1998, Dr. McIlroy has served as Assistant Dean for Medical Education at the College of Medicine and has chaired the Executive Curriculum Committee. For over 15 years, she has been director of the Med III/IV Academic Program which oversees the educational program for the third and fourth year medical students.
Kendall A. Smith, MD ‘68
Dr. Kendall A. Smith graduated with a B.S. in biology from Denison University and summa cum laude from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1968. Dr. Smith is the Rochelle Belfer Professor of Immunology and Medicine at Cornell University’s Weill Medical College and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. He is also a Senior Attending Physician and Chief of The Division of Immunology at The New York Presbyterian Medical Center. After clinical training in medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital, and hematology/oncology research at the National Cancer Institute and Dartmouth Medical School, Dr. Smith embarked on a career that focused on fundamental studies of cell proliferation. While on the faculty at Dartmouth Medical School for 20 years, Dr. Smith focused on basic research into lymphocyte proliferation and how the immune system operates. Since 1994, he and his research group at Weill Cornell have focused on new approaches to augment immunity to treat chronic viral infections.
Erwin R. Thal, MD ‘62
Dr. Erwin R. Thal received his Doctor of Medicine degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1962, followed by a rotating internship at Parkland Memorial Hospital in 1962-63. He completed his general surgery residency at Parkland in 1969. Dr. Thal joined the faculty at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School as an instructor in the department of surgery in July 1969 and was promoted to professor in September 1982. He was in charge of the surgical emergency room from July 1970 through June 1994, and was appointed medical director of the Day Surgery Unit at Parkland in January 1995. He is a former chairman of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma and past vice president of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma and the Western Surgical Association. He now serves as a governor-at-large for the North Texas Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and Director of the Willed Body Program at UT Southwestern Medical Center.
ALUMNI SERVICE AWARD
Ruth Brown, MD ‘69
Dr. Ruth Brown graduated from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1969 and is currently a pediatrician at Northside Pediatrics in Atlanta. She also earned her B.A. in microbiology from OSU. She is a past president of the Medical Alumni Society Board of Governors and the past College of Medicine representative to the Ohio State University Alumni Association Alumni Advisory Council. In addition, she has also been active in volunteer efforts to solicit gifts for the Class of 1969 Scholarship Fund and was a member of the Scholarship and Medical Education Steering Committee for the Power to Change Lives Campaign. Currently, she serves on the Executive Advisory Committee of the Medical Alumni Society Board of Governors.
FACULTY TEACHING AWARD
Catherine Lucey, MD
Dr. Catherine Lucey currently serves as Vice Dean for Education at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and is Associate Vice President for Health Sciences Education for the Office of Health Sciences. She has served as vice chair for education and director of the residency program in the OSU Department of Internal Medicine since 2002 and her leadership was instrumental in the acceptance of the OSU Internal Medicine residency program into the inaugural cohort of Educational Innovations Project sites by the Residency Review Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. She earned her medical degree in 1992 from Northwestern University and completed her residency in internal medicine at San Francisco General Hospital, University of California-San Francisco.
David Wininger, MD
Dr. David Wininger is Associate Director of the Internal Medicine Residency program at The Ohio State University. He is board certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases (subspecialty). Since coming to OSU in 1995, he has earned numerous awards, including the Outstanding Teaching Award from the graduating medical school class of 1999. He also earned the College of Medicine Excellence in Teaching Award in 2002 . Dr. Wininger is a 1989 graduate of the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis and completed his residency in internal medicine at Duke University Medical Center in 1992.
