At the heart of AMSA are these groups, organized around action. The following groups are traditionally supported by AMSA, although most of them function independently. The most active groups have their own pages both on the OSU website and on the national AMSA website.
AIDS Action
"8000 people die every day. The time to act is now".--Health Professional Students AIDS Advocacy Network, http://www.amsa.org/global/hpsaan.cfm
These students are dedicated to creating a national network focused on advocating for the fight against the global AIDS pandemic. We have representatives at a growing number of medical, public health, and nursing schools around the country all working to coordinate efforts to have the strongest voice possible. http://medicine.osu.edu/amsa/2023.cfm
Minority Affairs Committee
With the advent of programs and policies to end affirmative action, it has become imperative that we as future leaders focus on diversity. MAC will continue to promote awareness of these issues that will affect not only the field of medicine but the general public as well. Goals for this year include increasing minority membership, keeping members aware of issues that affect minorities, and developing projects on the local and national level. http://medicine.osu.edu/amsa/3124.cfm http://www.amsa.org/adv/mac/
GLBT Issues in Medicine
This is an organization of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Questioning and Straight medical students who support each other and work to educate the medical school community. The group is made up of committed advocates of GLBTIQ patients, who are an invisible minority that is often left unrecognized and sometimes openly stigmatized by medical institutions. This group welcomes all medical students, regardless of sexual orientation! http://medicine.osu.edu/amsa/3123.cfm http://www.amsa.org/adv/lgbtpm/
Women in Medicine
This advocacy group is organized in conjunction with the American Medical Women's Association (AMWA). This group has worked with the National Center of Excellence in Women's Health at OSU to provide lunch speaker series on issues in women's health and issues for women physicians. This group also provides volunteer opportunities for medical students. The group is open to all students, regardless of gender. http://womeninmed.org.ohio-state.edu/
International Health Interest Group
This is one of the strongest interest groups at Ohio State. Every year, the IHIG sends students abroad for summer medical/cultural experiences. This group assists students in finding an appropriate program and raises funds to alleviate travel costs. Students have gone to Peru, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Bolivia, Swaziland, Indonesia, China, India, Nepal, Guatemala, Cuba, Spain, and elsewhere. The student led trip to Swaziland was created in 2003 in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program to give students valuable experience in public health and AIDS work in Sub-Saharan Africa. http://medicine.osu.edu/globalhealth/5659.cfm
