Aprovechando Salud y Educacion

Our Mission:

The mission of Aprovechando Salud y Educación is to spread health awareness to the Latino population.  We hope to dispel any myths or fears that this group of people have concerning symptoms, diseases, treatments, and hospital visits. A.S.E. wishes to reduce the miscommunications between medical staff that "speak enough to get by" and Spanish speaking immigrants.  Our goal is also to give students experience in relating with Latinos and health-related issues.

Our Mission in Action:

We promote health education and disease prevention through pamphlets, videos, mini-presentations, Q & A, and screenings given to Hispanic/Latino patients while waiting at free clinics or at supermarkets around Columbus.  The screenings that we give are to detect hypertension and diabetes.  A.S.E. members who would like to give diabetes screenings must be CODA certified (http://www.diabetesohio.org/.)

Our Approach:

We target people who are not proactive.  With A.S.E. the patients/shoppers do not have to deal with transportation to the site, possible child care issues, or scheduled classes.  Instead, we come to them. Our approach is convenient and takes no time that the patients/shoppers aren't already spending.
