Affiliated Centers/Research InstitutesRenowned as one of the nation’s top research universities, The Ohio State University houses some of the most productive research scientists in the world. Much of their investigative research and discovery takes place within the numerous research centers located on Ohio State’s extensive health sciences campus. Here, research scientists from across campus and around the world come together to conduct broad-based, interdisciplinary research, hold clinical trials, exchange ideas, share new approaches and techniques, experiment with new procedures, and develop new knowledge that holds the promise for discovering the causes and cures for some of the world’s most devastating and perplexing human illnesses and diseases.

Many of these centers provide expertise and training to clinical and basic scientists within the university, as well as to researchers in government and private industry. Many offer assistance with data analysis, methodology development, data base creation and maintenance, documentation and manuscript publishing. Some help medical investigators conduct safe, controlled, inpatient and outpatient studies, such as Ohio State’s General Clinical Research Center, one of the first of its kind in the nation. Most are considered a valued resource by research scientists for identifying critical research projects ongoing at Ohio State and the scientists engaged in them.

Below is an overview of only some of the research centers and institutes affiliated with the School of Biomedical Science and their collaborative research endeavors.

The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center is one of only 38 comprehensive cancer centers in the United States designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The Center takes a multidisciplinary team approach to cancer research, patient care, prevention and community outreach, unifying scientists and researchers from 13 Ohio State colleges.

The Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute develops innovative strategies for curing patients with heart and lung disease and preventing such diseases from developing in individuals at risk. The institute houses core laboratories in bioinformatics, electron paramagnetic resonance, cell analysis, microarray-genetics, microscopy, and proteomics and 350 staff, including 86 faculty in cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, and pulmonary/critical care, as well as 200 technical staff.

Using molecular and cellular approaches, researchers at the Center for Molecular Neurobiology are addressing problems of major significance in the nervous system --problems in the areas of neurodevelopment, transport mechanisms, neurodegeneration, neurogenesis, cell signaling, gene expression, and the pathobiology of Alzheimer’s disease. Their findings are leading to the creation of essential animal and biochemical models for basic processes and neurological disorders.

The Institute for Behavioral Medicine Research conducts broad research in the field of psychoneuroimmunology (PNI), the study of how the brain interacts with the body's immune system. Its 13 faculty researchers, the largest contingent of PNI researchers in the world, are experts in the fields of immunology, virology, psychiatry, psychology, endocrinology, molecular biology, behavior, oncology and the neurosciences. The Institute has garnered more than $40 million in research grants in the last decade, including two major program project grants from the National Institutes of Health.

In response to the deluge of experimental data stemming from recent, revolutionary advances in basic science and technology, the Mathematical Biosciences Institute brings together mathematical scientists and bioscientists to develop mathematical theories, statistical methods, and computational algorithms for analyzing and structuring data in meaningful ways. Dedicated to the mathematical biosciences, the institute offers vigorous programs of research and education that foster the growth of an international community of researchers in this new field.

The Center for Microbial Interface Biology focuses on the complex study of microbe-host interactions and conducts research in Infectious Diseases, Pathogenesis, and Bioterrorism. The center is currently focused on respiratory infectious diseases, intracellular parasitism, and granulomatous inflammation.
