Drs. Ankeny, Sanders, Popovich and coworkers have shown that experimental spinal cord injury elicits chronic activation of a B cell-dependent autoimmune response.
In this novel study, high levels of anti-DNA antibodies were detected in spinal cord injured rats with a pattern that is similar to that seen in systemic lupus erythematosus. This is the first report that spinal cord injury can cause a clear dysregulation of B-cell function. Link |
