Epstein to Discuss Peer Assessment
Recent studies of peer assessments suggest that when trainees receive thoughtful ratings and comments by peers in a timely and confidential manner, along with support from advisers to help them reflect on the reports, they find the process powerful, insightful, and instructive. Ronald M. Epstein, MD, will discuss peer assessment on March 25 at noon in 234 Meiling Hall. Dr. Epstein is Director of Research in Family Medicine and Associate Dean for Educational Evaluation and Research at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry and Director of the Deans’ Teaching Fellows Program. RSVP to Megan Rock - megan.rock@osumc.edu.
Harvard Incident Raises Questions about Faculty Conflicts of Interest
A recent U.S. Senate probe exposing the conflicts of interest of medical school professors who also work for the drug industry has implications for all medical schools, and OSU is no exception. The COM is drafting a vendor interaction policy to establish acceptable business practices and ethical principles to guide interactions of faculty, staff and trainees with vendors. Chandran L, Gusic M, Baldwin C, Turner T, Zenni E, Lane JL, Balmer D, Bar-on M, Rauch DA, Indyk D, Gruppen L. “Evaluating the Performance of Medical Educators: A Novel Analysis Tool to Demonstrate the Quality and Impact of Educational Activities,” Academic Medicine. 2009; 84:58-66
The percentage of clinician educators at U.S. medical schools has increased dramatically in the last 25 years, however, there are serious barriers to promotion of clinical educators compared to basic researchers. One obstacle to the promotion of educators is that the conventional curriculum vitae format using grant dollars and peer-reviewed publications to document research productivity is inadequate for educational efforts. This article provides an analysis tool for the objective evaluation of educational activities and scholarship in educator portfolios. This tool provides a standardized method to evaluate educators useful for promotions committees as well as educator self-assessment to measure their own performance and build their skills.
