News

Epstein to Discuss Peer Assessment March 25
Assessments by peers, members of the clinical team, and patients can provide insight into trainees’ work habits, capacity for teamwork, and interpersonal sensitivity. Recent studies of peer assessments suggest that when trainees receive thoughtful ratings and comments by peers in a timely and confidential manner, along with support from advisers to help them reflect on the reports, they find the process powerful, insightful, and instructive. Join Ronald M. Epstein, MD, for a conversation about peer assessment March 25 at noon in 234 Meiling Hall. Dr. Epstein is Director of Research in Family Medicine and Associate Dean for Educational Evaluation and Research at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry and Director of the Deans’ Teaching Fellows Program.  RSVP to Megan Rock.

“Assessment in Medical Education,” Ronald M. Epstein, MD, New England Journal of Medicine, 2007; 356:387-96.
How often, as an attending physician working with a student, do you receive a form that asks you to evaluate the student’s fund of knowledge, procedural skills, professionalism, interest in learning, and systems-based practice? This article provides a conceptual framework for and a brief update on commonly used and emerging methods of assessment; discusses the strengths and limitations of each method; and identifies several challenges in the assessment of the physician’s professional competence and performance.
