Welcome to Education in Action:  This e-newsletter is sent to all faculty of the OSU College of Medicine to keep them informed of activities in the education mission.



News

Ted Fraker, MD FACC will assume the leadership of the Executive Curriculum Committee, effective July 1, 2008.  Dr. Fraker will work with Associate Dean for Medical School Curriculum, Dan Clinchot, to revise the medical school curriculum for the entering class of 2010.  Faculty with an interest in working on this major curricular revision are encouraged to submit their names to Dr. Dan Clinchot (Daniel.clinchot@osumc.edu).  The College of Medicine is deeply grateful for the work of Dr. Mary McIlroy, Assistant Dean for Medical Education for her long tenure as chair of this vital committee.

Under the leadership of Virginia Sanders, PhD, the Faculty Academy Task Force has outlined a vision for the OSU COM Faculty Academy for Teaching and Leadership Excellence.  The Executive Steering Committee will meet on August 4, 2008 to initiate the application process for Master Teachers.  Read More about the faculty academy.

The Education Mission has recently completed a Strategic Planning Process. Our Vision statement: Transforming Health Care by Educating Leaders for the Health Professions. Education Leadership Positions

The Office of the Vice Dean for Education in the College of Medicine is undergoing reorganization, resulting in several opportunities for educators.

  1. Dr. Linda Stone, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, will retire in June 2009.  We are seeking a new Associate Dean for Student Life.  This position is responsible for overseeing programs designed to enhance the personal and professional development of medical students. This is a 0.8 FTE position.  Read More
  2. To assist in the implementation of the Educational Strategic Plan, Assistant Dean for Evaluation and Assessment will be responsible for developing a system of valid and reliable assessment strategies for students and medical school educational programs.  This position reports to Dr. Dan Clinchot, Associate Dean for Medical School Curriculum.  Read More
  3. Medical Director for the Clinical Skills Education and Assessment Center: This 0.2 FTE position will be responsible for the strategic vision of the CSEAC and developing and maintaining education and assessment programs involving simulation. Read More
  4. Director for Step 2 CS preparation: This 0.1 FTE position is responsible for helping students prepare for the USMLE clinical skills exam.  Review of student videotapes and coaching of students are a major focus of this position.  Read More.

Recognitions and Awards

Congratulations to the College of Medicine Class of 2008 Teaching Award Winners

  • Dr. Doug Knutson received the Professor of the Year Award
  • Drs. Mohamed Awad (Anesthesiology), Colin Kaide (Emergency Medicine) and Tammi Gutierrez (Family Medicine) received the Faculty Outstanding Teaching Awards
  • The Resident Outstanding Teaching Awards went to Drs. Sean Kelly (Internal Medicine), Ziad Kutayli (Surgery) and Jason Smith (Surgery).

Congratulations to all, and thanks to all the hardworking faculty of the College of Medicine.

Drs. Cynthia Ledford, Joanne Lynn and Mary McIlroy and medical student Lauren Haveman recently represented The Ohio State University as a competitively selected team at Indiana University’s Relationship Centered Care Immersion Conference III.  Read More about what they learned.



Funding Opportunities

The COM will offer two grants of up to $2500 for mid-career faculty women who have been accepted to attend the Mid-Career Women Faculty Professional Development Seminar (Dec 6-9 in Scottsdale, Arizona). This seminar is sponsored jointly by the AAMC and the Harvard Medical School Department of Continuing Education. Enrollment is limited; applicants must submit a CV and a completed application by August 22. To request funding from the COM, please submit your completed application to Catherine Lucey, MD, by August 22. Read More about the meeting.

In addition, the COM will offer two grants of $5000 for faculty selected to attend the 2009 Harvard Macy Educators in the Health Professions Program. This program will run January 18-28 and May 17-22, 2009.  The application requires a one-page project proposal for an educational project that is aligned with The Ohio State University College of Medicine Strategic Plan. Faculty interested in applying for the Harvard Macy Educators in the Health Professions Program should plan to attend a meeting on successful proposal submission., which will be held on Friday, August 15, 2008 from 3:00 to 4:00 pm in 106 Meiling Hall.  If you are interested in attending the meeting, please reply to Penny Dolby @ penny.dolby@osumc.edu.

With the explosion of biomedical knowledge centered around mechanisms of disease and therapeutics, there is increasing realization of the importance of integrating basic science teaching with the clinical care of patients. This article, from this month’s Academic Medicine, summarizes curricular strategies that different medical schools have used to reinforce basic science in the clinical years of medical school.
