A December 18 seminar, "Preparing for a Crucial Conversation Before You Have to Have One," will provide a framework approaching important conversations and the tools for making them successful. Moderated by John D. Mahan, MD, Professor of Pediatrics and Vice Chair for Education, a panel composed of Laura Phieffer, MD, Director of Orthopaedic Trauma, Bryan L. Martin, DO, Professor of Clinical Medicine and Director, Allergy & Immunology Fellowship and Bob Forte, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in the OSU Faculty & Staff Assistance Program, will use an open discussion of a clinical vignette to highlight the characteristics of crucial conversations and discuss practical skills for preparing for and having crucial conversations. Presented December 18, 2009, 12:00 - 1:00 pm, in Room 115 of the BRT.

Wear, D.  A perfect storm: The convergence of bullet points, competencies, and screen reading in medical education. Academic Medicine. 2009; 84: 1500–1504.
Print this article on paper, turn away from your computer screen, and read. Dr. Wear helps us to see that “media are not just passive channels of information, but that they shape the process of thought.” In this opinion piece, Wear argues that the proliferation of PowerPoint for teaching, the application of competencies for cataloging, and the shift to the screen for reading has reduced complex medical education principles to bullet points and simplistic lists of objectives. The combination may be “providing the elements of a perfect storm that risks turning medical education into vocational training.” This article is available through the E-Journals on the Prior Health Sciences Web Site.
