Strategies for Assessing and Reporting Professional Behaviors, How Far Have We Come?

Judy A. Shea, et. al., Professionalism in Clerkships: An Analysis of MSPE Commentary, Academic Medicine, Vol. 83, No. 10 / October 2008 Supplement, S1-4

Based on a content analysis, of 293 Medical Student Performance Evaluations (MSPEs) for 2005 graduates Shea and others concluded that “Most professionalism comments in MSPEs are generic and somewhat bland, tending to be about students’ collegial interactions and hard work. More detail and breadth may be facilitated by wider use of behavior-centered evaluation in clerkships.”

The 2002 AAMC Guidelines for Preparation of the MSPE (dean’s letters) called for a new Appendix “to contain information supplementary to the body of the MSPE regarding the assessment of the student’s performance relative to his or her peers in the area of professional attributes.”  The guidelines further specified the following professional attributes be considered: 1. ability to treat patients with compassion; 2. honesty and integrity; 3. respect for others; 4. ability to act as an advocate for patients; 5. communication skills; and 6. commitment to putting the needs of others before one’s own needs.”
