Andreatta, PB & Gruppen LD. Conceptualising and classifying validity evidence for simulation. Medical Education. 2009; 1028-1035.
The authors clarify why describing an assessment as “validated,” as if it were appropriate for all times, in all places, for all audiences, and for all purposes, is a fallacy. The authors use simulation examples to provide a framework for the validity evidence requirements in assessment and evaluation to be used by medical educators. Opnions
“Tomorrow's Doctors: An Improvement If Evaluated”
In this article, the author questions the General Medical Council’s (GMC) proposal to make, as a first priority, teaching students how to apply their knowledge and skills in a competent and ethical manner and to use their ability to provide leadership and to analyze complex and uncertain situations. While there is much in the proposal that he sees as an improvement, the author wonders how these goals can be translated into practice in a system that is already stretched to its limits, citing the current low number of clinical academic consultants and teaching staff, as well as the continued emphasis placed on research production over teaching as an institutional value. As a safeguard, he urges the GMC to announce an independent and transparent monitoring and evaluation mechanism to provide an annual report card on the implementation of the proposal and to require that all physicians take on the responsibility of educating the next generation of physicians. This article is available through the E-Journals on the Prior Health Sciences Web Site. (Use this link if you are off campus.)
