New Program to Encourage Interdisciplinary Scholarship
OSU recently announced the creation of a new program to deal with global quality of life issues, including poverty, hunger, health and disease, climate change, economic systems, and industrial competitiveness, to name a few. The program will encourage trans-institutional and interdisciplinary scholarship that addresses these issues through the formation of Centers for Innovation and Innovation Groups. As many as four Centers for Innovation and six Innovation Groups may be developed over the next two years, initiated by faculty and focused around faculty research interests in these emerging areas. Faculty are encouraged to submit Centers for Innovation proposals by Monday, March 30, 2009, with a letter of intent to submit an application by Monday, February 16, 2009. The deadline for Innovation Groups proposals is Monday, April 13, 2009.

Recognition & Awards
Postdoctoral researcher Jason M. Zimmerer, PhD, under the mentorship of Ginny L. Bumgardner, MD PhD, has received a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Postdoctoral Fellowship (F32). Results from these studies and the work continued under this Fellowship have implications for design of new or alteration of current immunosuppressive strategies to mitigate the development of alloantibodies after transplant and to reduce the incidence of graft loss due to chronic as well as acute humoral rejection. An important Research Education goal of the Postdoctoral Office is to stimulate the submission of these career awards and to facilitate the success of these applications

Alex Y. Zheng. Janessa K. Lawhorn, Thomas Lumley, Scott Freeman, "Application of Bloom’s Taxonomy Debunks the “MCAT Myth,” Science Magazine, 319 (no. 5862), 414 – 415
Contemporary popular thinking about multiple choice exams is that they can only test the recall of isolated facts. The general public has been taught by organizations like FairTest, The National Center for Fair and Open Testing, that educators who use multiple choice tests only teach isolated facts. The authors of this Science Magazine article creatively apply Bloom’s Taxonomy of Cognitive Objectives to investigate whether various forms of multiple choice exams test more than the memorization of rote facts. Their findings are surprising and a wake-up call for all science educators involved along the pipeline of producing working biologists and physicians. This article is available through the E-Journals on the Prior Health Sciences Web Site. (Use this link if you are off campus).
