Clinical Teaching Handbook

Home > Resources for Educators > Clinical Teaching Handbook

The Clinical Teaching Handbook is a collection of the essentials of “good” clinical teaching in an easy-to-use, practical guide.  It follows an outline format, uses cases and examples to illustrate key points, and stresses biopsychosocial and ethical issues.  It is intended to meet the needs of busy clinicians and residents who, despite multiple pressures on their time, desire to be the best teachers they can become.

The handbook was designed to provide guidance when practicing specific skills, such as giving feedback, evaluating learners, helping students learn a clinical skill, or leading an ethics discussion.  The chapters are intentionally short, practical and to the point.  The authors were selected for their expertise and reputations for high quality teaching including Residency and Clerkship Directors, and clinical teachers from multiple disciplines at The Ohio State University Medical Center and affiliated community hospitals.  We have added twenty new sections and multiple new authors to the second edition of the handbook.
