College of Medicine Reaches Goal Early

The recently released 2008 U.S. News & World Report “America’s Best Graduate Schools” rankings place the OSU College of Medicine 31st in Research among America’s 125 medical schools and 20 schools of osteopathic medicine. This is a gain of one position over the 2007 rankings and a gain of 13 positions since 2003, when a goal was set to reach this rank by 2008.  As in the previous year, the OSU College of Medicine ranked 13th among public institutions.

The magazine’s overall college of medicine research rankings are based on a weighted average of eight indicators: peer assessment score, assessment score by residency directors, average undergraduate GPA, average MCAT score, acceptance rate, faculty-to-student ratio, NIH research grants, and NIH research grants per faculty member.

The peer assessment score was the most improved indicator for OSU, increasing from 3.2 to 3.3, and the faculty-to-student ratio also increased from 2.3 to 2.4.

“This is great news,” says OSU College of Medicine Dean Chip Souba, MD, ScD. “It validates the tremendous commitment our faculty and staff have made to continuously improve the teaching and learning environment for our students at Ohio State.”

“The increase in peer assessment score is especially noteworthy,” says Senior Vice President and Executive Dean for Health Sciences and OSU Medical Center CEO Fred Sanfilippo, MD, PhD, “because it shows that more of our peer institutions throughout the country are taking notice of the extraordinary change and innovation taking place at Ohio State.”
