The OSU Medical Center

About the College > The OSU Medical Center

The Ohio State University Medical Center may reside at the southern edge of campus, but it is at the center of the electrifying developments taking place in clinical care, education and research.

The Ohio State University Medical Center As a medical student here, you're at the heart of the action. Since Ohio State is a major regional referral center, you'll see the complex cases that house staff at some other schools may not. You're part of a team diagnosing and treating conditions both exotic and everyday. You work side-by-side with faculty members who are among the leading experts in their fields, and learn directly from top residents and fellows who aren't that far removed from their own days as students.

In order to build the depth of experience and confidence you need if you're going to be successful as a physician, you need to see a volume of cases and have many opportunities to develop your clinical skills. You'll have that at Ohio State. You'll also see how physicians translate research discoveries into patient care and how education -- valued as a lifelong pursuit at Ohio State -- inspires everything we do.

The Ohio State University Medical Center includes:

Annually recognized as being among the nation's best hospitals by U.S. News & World Report, the Ohio State University Medical Center and its James Cancer Hospital attract patients from Ohio and around the world.

The Ohio State Universtiy College of Medicine The Medical Center admits more than 44,000 patients annually and experiences some 635,000 outpatient visits and surgeries per year, including more than 75,000 emergency department visits. The range of primary and tertiary care facilities, together with a large and diverse patient population, provide you with extensive patient care exposure.

Your mentors will be among the finest around, as more than 96 percent of Ohio State physician faculty are board certified, compared to 48 percent nationwide. Many Ohio State physicians have been featured in the national publication, The Best Doctors In America.

The Medical Center housed one of the first coronary care units in the nation. Ohio State is recognized for its pioneering efforts in the early detection and treatment of cervical cancer, the care of women with high-risk pregnancies, the discovery of hairy cell leukemia, and the development of radioimmuno-guided surgery for cancer. In addition, one of the country's largest and most technologically advanced solid organ transplant programs is found at Ohio State.

This spirit of innovation continues to accelerate. When it opens in 2004, the Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital will place Ohio State among a small group of academic medical centers that have melded cardiovascular research with clinical care to form freestanding heart care programs.

And if you need a break amidst your rotations at the Medical Center, you can unwind in the beautiful House Staff Call Suites. The $2 million, 17,000 square foot facility features 40 sleep rooms, a spacious lounge, computer center, vending area, and classroom.

There's a great deal to learn and you'll never know it all. If you're an Ohio State graduate, though, you'll be assured that you have a depth of education few can match. You'll be ready.
