Reference Letters

Admissions > Applicant FAQ's > Reference Letters

How do I know if my reference letters have been received?

  • Reference letters are listed in the Application Letters of Reference section located in the upper, right-hand corner of your status page. If there are no letters listed in this section, they either have not yet been received or are in the process of being entered. It is possible that we have received letters for you but have not yet posted them. Please be patient and allow two to four weeks for processing.
  • Reference letters received from electronic reference letter services such as VirtualEvals or Interfolio are marked as such. To verify individual letters submitted as part of the packet, contact the reference letter service directly.
  • Letters sent through the mail will be listed by the name of the recommender.
  • We do not notify you when reference letters have been received. You are responsible for monitoring receipt of your reference letters.

Do all reference letters need to be received before my file is reviewed?

  • No. Review of your application is not dependent upon the receipt of reference letters. However, reference letters must be received before you arrive for a scheduled interview date.
  • Once we have your verified primary (AMCAS) application, the secondary, and valid MCAT scores, the file is ready for consideration for a possible interview.

How many reference letters are required?

  • The minimum number of reference letters required is two from faculty who have taught and graded your course work.  Additional letters from individuals who are able to speak to your abilities and unique characteristics are also encouraged. If your school provides a committee letter, we will accept that in lieu of the two academic letters. We accept letters electronically via VirtualEvals and Interfolio as well as U.S. Post.

How many reference letters may be submitted?

  • The average number of reference letters submitted in support of an application is three. It is advised that the number of reference letters be limited to no more than four or five.
