Visiting and International Students

The Ohio State University College of Medicine offers electives for medical students from U.S. medical schools which are LCME and AOA accredited. A maximum of two four-week electives can be taken for a total of eight weeks.

International students can apply through the Office of Global Health Education website. An international student must attend a school which is WHO-listed and in which more than 50% of the students who are citizens of the country where the medical school is located, regardless of published address.

To be eligible to take electives at Ohio State, you must have completed all your third-year requirements and any specific prerequisites for the clerkship; be certified that you are in good academic standing at your medical school; be taking the requested course for credit for your institution; have passed USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX; and have proof of malpractice insurance, appropriate immunizations, and personal health insurance.

If you meet all the above requirements, the department offering the elective will then consider your application. Electives are assigned on a space available basis after our own students are scheduled.

Our academic year begins in July. Applications may be submitted as early as March 15th. Notification will not begin until after April 15th.

Application Process

Once we have received your application and the required components we will contact the departments to see if they are able to accommodate you for the requested rotation and date. You will be notified whether or not you have been accepted as soon as confirmation is received from the department.

Please note the deadlines and specific requirements. Also please watch carefully for communications-in particular, note that the fingerprint card will be MAILED to you while other items will be E-MAILED to you. You must complete the fingerprint card and have it mailed back to us no later than 4 weeks prior to the start of the rotation. We also require you to complete a 10 panel toxicology screen and have the results faxed to us no later than 4 weeks prior to the start of the rotation.
