Mauritania is large country located in Northwest Africa, situated along the North Atlantic Ocean between Western Sahara and Senegal. The country is mostly barren and comprised of the Sahara desert.

Ohio State medical student Jessica Thiessen was a member of an eight-member team who traveled to Mauritania in the summer of 2005 as a medical volunteer with the organization Mercy and Truth. Her team consisted of three other medical students, one nursing student, two nurses, and one physician. They provided free medical care and medications to several villages.
