The 19 faculty researchers currently comprising the IBMR make up
perhaps the largest contingent of PNI researchers in the world
and
are experts in the fields of immunology, virology, psychiatry,
psychology, endocrinology, molecular biology, behavior, oncology
and the neurosciences.
With plans to nearly double its membership in the coming years and
the construction of a new research facility, the Institute continues
to be remarkably successful in winning competitive national grants
to support its work.
In the past, Ohio State University researchers have discovered that:
- Chronic stress can weaken the immune status of caregivers
to the extent that they are more susceptible to the onset of
some diseases;
- High levels of psychological stress can slow the process
of wound healing to such an extent as to increase the risks
of recovery in procedures ranging from minor dental procedures
to major surgery;
- Vaccines given to protect against both bacterial and viral
diseases may be impaired if the inoculations are given when
a person is highly stressed;
- Even in people who are normally considered to be happy,
the effects of minor psychological stress can have health impacts.
The Institute has garnered more than $40 million in research grants
in the last decade including two major program project grants
from the National Institutes of Health making it one of the
world's centers in the study of mind-body interactions. |
