The American Board of Internal Medicine Research Pathway combines training in clinical internal medicine with training in basic science or clinical research. The pathway is six or seven years in duration and incorporates two years of clinical experience as a resident, one or more years of clinical experience as a fellow, and three years of research training.  During the years of research training, a weekly outpatient clinic in the fellow's chosen subspecialty is required.

The advantage of this pathway is an earlier entry into research opportunities in your chosen subspecialty.  The total number of years of training is approximately equal to a conventional residency plus fellowship training pathway.  For some individuals, the last year of the fellowship and research experience may be completed as a junior faculty member.

Individuals with an advanced degree (MS or PhD) or extensive research experience and clearly defined career goals focusing on a research career are good candidates for this program.  Applications are considered during the PGY-1 year.  Intern applicants interested in this program are encouraged to discuss this opportunity with the program directors at the time of the interview for internship
