The OSU Hematology and Oncology Program

The Division of Hematology and Oncology is part of Ohio State’s Department of Internal Medicine and has a long history of providing compassionate, personal service to those suffering from cancer and blood disorders. The Division is a leader in early drug development, human cancer genetics, and biological response modifiers in the treatment of cancer and its complications. Molecular biology, pharmacology, biochemistry and basic immunology are integral parts of the Division's developmental therapeutics and cancer immunology programs.

The Division’s 30 faculty physicians see more than 1,000 outpatients per month at clinic facilities within the OSU James Cancer Hospital, JamesCare at Morehouse Plaza and JamesCare in Dublin. In addition, they care for more than 2,500 inpatients at the James Cancer Hospital.

Faculty members in the Division of Hematology and Oncology focus on translational research with the mission of bringing leading-edge cancer therapies from the laboratory to the bedside. This unique approach provides the optimal setting for multi-disciplinary patient treatment and collaboration between specialists while offering patients the latest treatments and therapies.

Our Mission

The mission of the Division is to continue as a national leader in the field of hematology and oncology while developing a molecular approach to medicine for the 21st century.  This is being accomplished by striving toward excellence in the areas of patient care, research and teaching.

This divisional mission is supported and confirmed by the mission of the OSU James Cancer Hospital, which states:

The Comprehensive Cancer Center-Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute is a national and international leader in research, providing high-quality patient care and educational programs for the benefit of the citizens of Ohio and beyond.

Through its highly qualified faculty and staff and their inter-disciplinary activities, the cancer program is uniquely positioned to reduce morbidity from cancer by:

·        Conducting basic and clinical research

·        Facilitating and expediting the transfer of results from scientific investigation to quality patient care

·        Providing high-quality health services in detection, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation

·        Contributing to the educational advancement of health professionals

·        Increasing public awareness regarding cancer

·        Promoting public policy changes to improve prevention, detection and treatment of cancer

The cancer program and other units of The Ohio State University work in partnership with other research centers, institutional providers of health services and health professionals to reduce the incidence of cancer and to provide effective treatment for patients with cancer.

Fellowship Program

The fellowship program in the Division of Hematology and Oncology offers two distinct training tracks: a 3-year hematology/oncology training program which offers trainees dual board eligibility in hematology and oncology in accordance with the American Board of Internal Medicine standards, and a 2-year medical oncology training program which offers trainees board eligibility in medical oncology in accordance with the American Board of Internal Medicine standards.

Both tracks offer intensive clinical training (18 months for dual certification and 12 months for oncology certification) and protected research time.  Fellows are encouraged to spend research time participating in clinical, laboratory or translational research. Individuals with MD, DO or PhD degrees are invited to apply.  Applicants are accepted into the program on the basis of merit and an interest in pursuing careers as physician-scientists or basic scientists focused on translational cancer research.  Read more…
