Steven Kirkby, MD (Chief Fellow)
Steve was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (which explains his ties to Penn State and his admiration for Joe Paterno). He spent time in the Keystone State as well as in Indiana before his family settled in Pickerington, Ohio. Steve graduated from Pickerington High School, where he was actively involved in football and baseball. Ohio Wesleyan University was Steve's college choice, where he excelled academically and athletically. He graduated magna cum laude and earned four varsity letters in football. After college, Steve decided to return to his Pennsylvania roots and attended Penn State University College of Medicine, where he graduated in 2001. Steve completed a combined internal medicine and pediatrics residency at the Ohio State University Medical Center and Nationwide Children's Hospital. He chose to continue his dual adult-pediatric training in fellowship and is currently in his 4th year of training in adult pulmonary/critical care at OSU and pediatric pulmonary medicine through Nationwide Children's Hospital. Steve was recognized with the Outstanding Fellow Award from Nationwide Children's Hospital for the 2006-07 academic year. Steve's primary clinical and research interests are cystic fibrosis and asthma. He is a member of the AII Planning Committee of the American Thoracic Society. Steve's wife, Cheryl, is a pediatrician in Marysville, Ohio. They have two young sons, Kevin and Ryan. Steve is an avid sports fan. While he remains loyal to the Nittany Lions, his appreciation and respect for the Buckeyes has grown with his time in Columbus.
