Dr. William Malarkey

Critical to the performance of the studies outlined under Projects 1 and 2 is the support contributed by our GCRC. Dr. William Malarkey, a co-investigator on each of these projects, is Program Director of the unit, and has interacted with the group for many years. Without GCRC support, the costs of many of our projects would have become prohibitive. The GCRC nurses will participate in the frequent blood drawing that is required in these proposals.  Of particular value is the special training that one of our nurses received at the NIH in regard to using the blister device.  This device was utilized in the acquisition of the preliminary data under Project 1. These same nurses are available for the studies proposed under Project 1. The GCRC nursing staff is a highly trained group and many of the nurses have been on the unit for ten years or longer. The GCRC also provides the space for performing those studies planned for Projects 1 and 2. The GCRC will also support the cost of numerous supplies related to obtaining blood, salivary and blister fluid samples. The GCRC is also involved in in sample preparation by centrifuging all of the samples and then storing them in a long-term freezer unit analysis. We consider the contributions of the GCRC a real strength for this proposal.
