Research: Oligodendrocytes, the myelinating cells of the central nervous system, die in many CNS diseases and after CNS trauma. The excitatory amino acid neurotransmitter glutamate is a mediator of oligodendrocyte cell death in many different models of CNS injury. Inflammation within the CNS has been shown to both exacerbate and improve outcome in CNS injury and disease. My current work focuses on how oligodendrocytes' response to excitotoxic stimuli is affected by inflammation, and the response of microglia to excitotoxic stimuli.
