In March 2011, a team of six presenters from OSU Medical Center led a two-part educational session at the Accreditation Coucil for Graduate Medical Education's (ACGME) Annual Education Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. Entitled "Turning the Titanic: Implementing a Culture of Professionalism at a Large Academic Medical Center," the two ninety-minute presentations outlined the steps that have been taken since 2003 to promote professionalism within the education, research and clinical missions within the Medical Center.
Led by Interim Dean Catherine Lucey, MD, the team of presenters included Larry Hutubise (Instructional Designer), Cynthia Ledford, MD (Chair, Professionalism Council), John Mahan, MD (Residency Program Director, Pediatrics), Bryan Martin, DO (Associate Dean for GME), Andrew Thomas, MD (Medical Director, University Hospital). The presenters shared the Medical Center's philosophical approach to improving professionalism, the implementation and structure of the Professionalism Council, the development of the Professionalism Consultation process, the implementation of the new Vendor Interaction Policy in 2009, and a variety of ongoing education efforts related to professionalism, including crew resource management.
