Fischer Honored with Cogan Award

The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) honored Andrew Fischer, PhD, Department of Neuroscience, this spring with the Cogan Award for his important contributions to the fields of myopia and vision-guided ocular growth, retinal stem cells and retinal regeneration. Fischer has demonstrated that Muller glial cells are the source for retinal regeneration in birds, a finding that motivated research in both the zebrafish and mouse, leading to a better understanding of the regenerative potential for these species. Fischer delivered the Cogan Award Lecture, “Retina-guided Ocular Growth, Muller Glia, Stem Cells and a Little Serendipity,” on May 3 at the ARVO annual meeting in Ft. Lauderdale. In addition, Fischer also received research recognition awards recently from The Fight for Sight Foundation and from the ARVO Foundation for Eye Research.
