Essig to Retire After 47 Years of Service

Garth Essig, MD, will retire May 31 after 47 years of service at Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Essig has notably served as student clerkship director for the department since 1970, orienting nearly 9,000 medical students and shaping them into the physicians they are today.

Essig has taken on many other roles through the years within the Medical Center and has received many awards for his service in medical education, including: Professor of the Year, 1973; Senior Class Advisor, 1973,1974 and 1984; Acting Chairman of OB/GYN, 1973-1974; Senior Class Teaching Award, 1981, 1982, 1985, 1988 and 2007; Excellence in Teaching Award from The College of Medicine, 2002; Alumni Achievement Award from The College of Medicine, 2002; Distinguished Educator Award from The College of Medicine, 2003.

He was chair of Medical Information Management for 16 years and still serves on the committee. Additionally, he has been chair of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and chief of staff-elect and chief of staff from 2001-2005 of the Medical Center.

Dr. Essig is a champion of patient care and has had a busy general practice while supervising resident clinics and participating in the night and weekend staff coverage for the Emergency Department and in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics. Essig has played a vital role at the Medical Center over the last 47 years and will be missed dearly by his colleagues. On May 31, the department will host a reception to honor his service. More details to come.
