| The 2003 National Assessment of Adult Literacy estimates that 93 million Americans (nearly half of all American adults) struggle with reading and understanding most information disseminated in this complex society. Misunderstanding of health information, specifically, greatly impacts a patient’s adherence with treatment and increases one’s risk for complications.
