About the Staff

Carol Hasbrouck, Director of The Center and
Assistant Dean of Clinical Skills and Medical Education
 
Carol Hasbrouck accepted the position of Assistant Dean and Director of Clinical Skills Education and Assessment in April, 2004. She is no stranger to medical education. She began her career in medical education at Ohio State in the Division of Research and Evaluation in Medical Education. During her tenure there, she worked with undergraduate medical education primarily in the areas of testing and measurement and curriculum development. In 1994, she went to Riverside Methodist Hospital to take the position of Assistant Director of Medical Education. At Riverside, she had the opportunity to work in the area of residency education, as well as student education. She returned to Ohio State in 2001 to become the Director of Graduate Medical Education and remained in that position until taking on the task of heading up the Clinical Skills Education and Assessment Center. Carol is married and has two daughters.  She received her bachelor's degree from Miami Univeristy and her Master's degree from Ohio State.  She has served on the Worthington School Board for eleven years.  She and her family are passionate sports fans, and follow the Buckeyes closely.
 
Dr. Sheryl Pfeil, Medical Director of The Center
 
Dr. Pfeil is Associate Professor, Clinical Internal Medicine at The Ohio State University in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition in the Department of Internal Medicine. She is the Program Director for the Gastroenterology Fellowship Training Program, the Course Director of the Introduction to Clinical Medicine General Clerkship for medical students, Co-Leader of the Gastroenterology Block and Module Leader for the Med 1/2 Integrated Pathway Program, the Education Coordinator for Med 3 and Councilor for Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor society.  Dr. Pfeil has been on the faculty at OSU in the Department of Internal Medicine since 1990.  She received the Distinguished Educator Award from the OSU College of Medicine for outstanding teaching and curriculum development.  Dr. Pfeil was named one of America’s Best Doctors in a recent publication of "Best Doctors in America."  Her academic interests include medical student education, and she participates as a faculty facilitator for the Physician Development course called The Healer's Art, which promotes physician health and well being while demonstrating compassionate and humanistic care.
 
Jeff Adams, Procedures Lab Manager
 
Jeff received his bachelor’s degree from Morehead State University.  He comes to Ohio State from Wright State University’s Department of Emergency Medicine, where he was a Simulation Technician, responsible for running simulators, setting up practice labs, teaching health care professionals, developing new simulation processes, among many other tasks.  Jeff is also an EMT paramedic and brings with him the clinical and technical skills needed to facilitate and enhance simulation experiences.  Jeff is responsible for managing the daily operations of the procedural sessions, facilitating trainee practices, developing procedure manuals and helping to foster new procedures training opportunities.  Jeff's participation in the integration of skills and procedures into existing and future curricular programs is a critical aspect of his role in the Clinical Skills Center. 
 
 
Stacy Baker, Clinical Skills Center Program Coordinator
 
Stacy comes to the Clinical Skills Center as a 2005 graduate from The Ohio State University, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology.  While getting her masters from Ohio State in Allied Medicine Management, Stacy worked as a Medical Technologist in OSU's Critical Care Lab for two years.  During her masters work, Stacy's research was on assessing patients' satisfaction with their laboratory results.  As the Center's Program Coordinator, Stacy coordinates and manages the Interdisciplinary Clinical Skills Curriculum Program for second and fourth year medical students; she participates in program development, implementation and on-going maintenance and assessment; and Stacy participates in developing instructional programs and materials, including identification and evaluation of materials.  Stacy works closely with the Program Director for the Clinical Skills Curriculum and the Clinical Skills Education and Assessment Center staff.
 
Jim Beck, Senior Technical Applications Consultant
 
Jim is the Center's newest member of the Clinical Skills Center team. He joined the team in June 2010, having most recently worked in the OSU Medical Center Information Technology Department desigining and supporting audio and video systems.  Jim supports the technology used daily in the Center, evaluating, recommending and implementing new technology to support the Center.  With the Center's upcoming expansion of an additional floor, Jim's focus is largely on designing the technology involved in this new floor.  Jim has a passion for anything related to technology and for finding ways technology can easily be used by clinicians and educators. 
 
 
 
Janie Boyer,  Standardized Patient Program Manager
 
Janie’s primary focus is development and promotion of the Standardized Patient Program, including recruitment and training of a widely diverse group of individuals. She works closely with physicians from a variety of programs to create, organize and implement education and/or assessment activities for health care learners. Janie oversees and manages all Standardized Patient events in the Center, including OSCEs (Objective Structure Clinical Examinations). Janie maintains and manages statistical data for all Standardized Patient activities.   Janie came to OSU in 2003 from Medical College of Ohio in Toledo, where her responsibilities included implementation of the Department of Surgery’s education program for medical students. She also had the opportunity to participate in institutional and national research projects and publications related to surgical education.
 
John Hill, Clinical Skills Program Coordinator
 
John manages the interdisciplinary Clinical Skills Curriculum program for medical students in years two through four, facilitating the tracking of information and data in the Clinical Skills Center.  He also coordinates the efforts of the USMLE Step 2 CS practice exam and the financial aspects of the Standardized Patient program.  He facilitates the organization and administration of students' Clinical Skills Immersion Experience (CSIE) assessments and exams.  John develops, implements, and continuously maintains and assesses all components of the Clinical Skills Curriculum.  With this curriculum, he is responsible for assisting in the development of the instructional sessions, and materials, including identification and evaluation of materials; working with faculty and the Program Director on planning and implementing individual programs and sessions as needed.  John works with computer web sites and databases to coordinate, deliver and manage the CSIE curriculum.  He recruits faculty and works closely with Program Directors in the Office of Medical Education, the Program Director for the Clinical Skills Curriculum, the Clinical Skills Center staff and with faculty from various disciplines. John received his degree in Political Science from The Ohio State University.
 
Sara Pastore, Program Manager
 
Sara came to Ohio State as an Ohio Wesleyan University graduate, where she received degrees in Journalism and Psychology.  Sara joined the University with working experience in public relations as an internist for Kathryn Paugh at KRP Communications and as a Community Coordinator for ARP Communication.  As Program Manager for the Center, Sara manages and oversees all activities and operations of the Clinical Skills Center; she works with Department Chairs and Program and Residency Directors to organize student and resident use of the Center.  She serves as the primary contact for all tours and visits from national and international guests to OSU.  Sara participates in the planning and development of the annual budget.  She develops and oversees marketing of the Center and creates publicity materials.
