Affiliation Principles

  1. Affiliation agreements offer students and faculty unique opportunities not otherwise available at The Ohio State University College of Medicine or the Medical Center. The following principles are a general framework used in establishing affiliations.
    • Prospective and existing affiliations must be aligned with the overall mission and goals of The Ohio State University College of Medicine.
    • An affiliation must enhance educational or research opportunities for our students and faculty.
    • An equal level of commitment to the affiliation must be exhibited by both parties.
    • Affiliations must serve a purpose that can be met only by establishing a formal relationship.
    • It is an agreement that indicates that the relationship is recognized by the College of Medicine at the highest level.

  2. Functions of an Affiliation for Education
    • Provide opportunities for student exchanges for medically-related clinical electives including clinical or public health electives and electives involving clinical or public health research.
    • Ensure students exchanges provide a high-quality educational experience in a safe and mentored environment.

  3. Functions of an Affiliation for Research
    • Provide faculty with an environment for research that is otherwise not available through collaborations that involve just a single faculty member from each institution
    • Protect intellectual property of both institutions

  4. The OSU COM uses Memorandums of Understanding as the principle type of affiliation agreement.
    • Memorandum of Understanding (MOU): A general agreement to explore opportunities for collaboration, either for research or education or both, while not committing resources except as may be detailed in a subsequent specific agreement.
