Community Impact

Schweitzer Fellowship Comes to Columbus

Start early to instill in your students awareness that they  are on this earth to help and serve others; that is as  important to pass on to them as knowledge.                          -Albert Schweitzer

President Gee challenged the University and the Medical  Center to “Commit to Our Communities.” The College of  Medicine, bolstered by several educational and community partners, is embarking on a program that will indeed demonstrate our commitment to the community. The new Schweitzer Fellowship program site in Columbus answers the call to strengthen our local community through outreach.

Beginning in 2011, the Columbus Schweitzer Fellows Program, hosted by our College of Medicine, will administer and support year-long community service Fellowships that will be conducted in Columbus and in Athens. As an Albert Schweitzer Fellowship site, we join a group of 11 prominent institutions hosting the program including Baylor, Dartmouth, University of California - Berkeley, and the University of Maryland.

Fellows will be full-time students whose fields of study or personal interests are relevant to unmet health-related needs of local underserved individuals and communities. Student applicants will come from the Health Science Colleges, other OSU Columbus Campus Colleges, from Ohio University, and those from other area graduate and professional schools. These interdisciplinary Schweitzer Fellows will design and carry out projects that provide at least 200 hours of service through an existing community agency and will be supervised by an academic and community-based mentor.

In addition to facilitating service projects to benefit the Columbus and Athens communities, the Fellowship will develop emerging professionals who have the skills to address unmet health-related needs throughout their careers.

Community engagement is central to our academic mission. The Schweitzer Fellowship is a new opportunity for us to demonstrate our connection to our community.

Funding from Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation helped make possible the program’s expansion to Columbus and Athens.
