Community-Based Teaching
The Office of Outreach and Engagement and the Department of Family Medicine have developed community-based medical student rotations that partner medical students with community preceptors and provide diverse, outpatient clinical training in high-need areas. The mission of community-based teaching is two-fold: engage students in all clinical and administrative aspects of small-operational care and provide a meaningful patient care experience that may attract future doctors to underserved areas. Because of this effort, clinical preceptors have the opportunity to interact with young, bright physicians in training and showcase themselves to potential medical staff, with the ultimate goal of improving community healthcare.

AHEC Grant Program
Established in the Spring of 2005 for grant awards in the 2005-2006 academic year, the AHEC Grant Program reviews funding proposals for projects throughout Ohio State’s Health Sciences colleges, schools, and departments. Projects that include both community outreach and educational components are targeted. Further, the reviewers look to fund programs that focus on healthcare services for the underserved and vulnerable populations in Franklin County and surrounding areas.

Clear Health Communication
From interpreting prescription information to understanding an upcoming surgical procedure, the AHEC-funded Clear Health Communication program aims to teach health professionionals how to empower patients to participate in their healthcare and experience a safer, speedier recovery and promote a helath lifestyle. Since 2001, Ohio State has provided programs designed to increase awareness, knowledge and skills about health literacy. Dr. Sandy Cornett, director of the program has given many workshops on the subject around Ohio, as well as in other states.  Audiences have been health educators, physicians, nurses, and other health care providers. Dr. Cornett continues to conduct workshops and provide consultative services, but now has added web-based instruction as an efficient means of providing broader access to her expertise in health literacy.
