Research Interests

Morphine tolerance and dependence
Endogenous opioid peptides such as beta-endorphin and met enkephalin are decreased, and Mu-opioid receptor is upregulated, in the discrete brain regions in the rat during addiction to morphine. A decrease in the CNS opioid peptides, and the formation of less potent Mu-opoiod receptor, lead to the development of morphine tolerance and dependence. Administration of a small dose of benzodiazepines decreases the development of morphine tolerance and dependence, and reverses the changes in opioid peptides and Mu-opioid receptor induced by morphine.

Electoacupuncture and opioid peptides Electoacupuncture significantly increases the skin pain threshold to thermal stimulus and increases the concentration of beta-endorphin in lumbar CSF, and minimally affectes behavior, respiratory and cardiovascular systems in adult mares.

Opioids, nicotine and smoking behavior Endogenous opioid peptides such as beta-endorphin and met-enkephalin are involved in pain modulation and reward systems, and may contribute to nicotine reinforcement. Animals subjected to main-stream tobacco smoke exhibit higher levels of plasma and CNS opioid peptides that are associated with naloxone reversible antinociception. Nicotine is responsible for smoking associated increase in antinociception and opioid peptides as nicotine administration also increases antinociception and CNS opioid peptides.

Naltrexone, an opioid receptor antagonist, when given to normal male and female human volunteers decreases the plasma nicotine levels, number of cigarettes smoked and self-reported satisfaction with smoking. The inhibition of ad libitum smoking in volunteers by naltrexone opens up the field for smoking cessation using various doses of naltrexone and nicotine replacement therapy.
