| The clinical trial portion involves a combination of learning the administrative aspects of clinical trials and also assisting in their conduct. The majority of studies conducted by our Division are phase I, which means they use healthy volunteers who are paid to participate. We also do some phase II studies (small numbers of patients). If you look at our web site (www.med.ohio-state.edu/pharm/clinical), you can see the types of clinical trials that we conduct. We do almost everything except cancer chemotherapy. We've conducted as many as eight or nine clinical trials simultaneously, but most of the time we are doing only one or two, and sometimes we have gaps between studies. That's the nature of this business.
A student is expected to be involved in a variety of protocol-specific activities. These vary from one study to the next, but may include obtaining automated vital signs, interviewing subjects (either healthy volunteers or patients) to determine whether they meet eligibility criteria, reviewing medications taken by subject, administering questionnaires to subjects, etc. A student level of involvement would depend in part upon the study and your capabilities but would likely approach the involvement of regular unlicensed staff members in our Division. Students would not be doing physical examinations or other activities, which require a medical license, but they would be permitted to assist in some restricted duties (e.g., serve as a required witness for dosing).
We specialize in drug testing but not drug design. Also, we usually don't analyze biological samples obtained during the studies. The only laboratory component to the majority of our studies is to run pregnancy tests and sometimes urinalyses and to prepare samples for analysis (separating serum and plasma, centrifuging urine, etc.).
Credit Hour Requirement A minimum of 45 graduate credit hours is required to earn a Master's degree. Thirty-six of those credit hours must be completed at this university over a period of at least two quarters. A student must be registered for at least three credit hours the quarter in which graduation is expected. This is true for all graduating students.
Required Courses These are listed in Table 1-4.
Application to Graduate Submitting this application indicates that the student is expected to comple all degree requirements that quarter. The student, the adviser, and the Graduate Studies Committee chairperson must sign the form. The degree plan the student is pursuing, the proposed Master's Examination Committee members, and the expected date of the Master's Examination must be listed on the form. The Graduate Committee must be notified in writing one month in advance of the student's planned graduation.
