During their third year of medical school at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health, medical students rotate through an 8 week course of Psychiatry and Neurology. 4 of those weeks are spent in Psychiatry, with the possibilities of rotating through adult inpatient psychiatry, child and adolescent inpatient psychiatry, or the state hospital at Twin Valley Behavioral Health. During this time they also experience one half day a week observing electroconvulsive therapy during the rotation, have lecture for one full day each week, and their Psychiatry Shelf Copy test is at the end of the 8 week rotation. The psychiatry residents are expected to assist in supervising and instructing the medical students.
During their fourth year of medical school, students may choose to do a subinternship in psychiatry. While a subintern, in addition to patient care they will be offered the chance to give a Case Presentation and Discussion. The choices for the subinternship include :
-
Subinternship in Adult Psychiatry, with responsibilities on one of the adult inpatient units
-
Subinternship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, with responsibilities on the Child and Adolescent unit
-
Possible Subinternship in General psychiatry with experience in Forensic Psychiatry
-
Subinternship in Geriatric medicine, with exposure to inpatient and outpatient adult / geriatric psychiatry
4th year medical students from schools other than OSU may rotate through our department, however they must first contact OSU College of Medicine in order to set that up.
