NIH success rate at all-time low

The success rate for research project grant proposals submitted to NIH fell to a record low of 18% in federal fiscal year 2011, according to Dr. Sally Rockey, NIH's Deputy Director for Extramural Research. This and other finalized FY2011 statistics are published in Dr. Rockey's NIH blog

The low success rate is attributed to an increase in the number of applications, the decreased NIH budget, and the large proportion of funds allocated to non-competing continuation awards. A fuller discussion of the success rate is published to Science magazine's website and NIH's site.
