National Institutes of Health Director Francis S. Collins M.D., Ph.D., announced named Gary H. Gibbons, M.D., as director of the NIH's National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). Dr. Gibbons is currently founder and director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute, chairperson of the Department of Physiology, and professor of physiology and medicine at the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta.
NHLBI, with an annual budget exceeding $3 billion, is the third largest NIH institute. Dr. Gibbons will replace Susan B. Shurin, M.D., the acting director since late 2009, in summer 2012.
