Current Research Scholars FAQ
Orientation
I missed orientation, where are the materials?
It is a requirement of all students funded through the Roessler, Barnes & Bennett, Watts, and COM Supplemental scholarships to attend an orientation. If you have missed orientation, please contact Bianca McArrell, Program Manager to schedule a make-up session. Absences must be excused by your mentor for research related or previously arranged travel. Please visit the Current Research Scholars webpage for materials.
When will 2011 orientation be?
It is estimated that the 2011 Medical Student Research Orientation will be held after the conclusion of the 2010-2011 Medical School Year in late May to early June. Those individuals funded by the various scholarships will be notified of the open sessions.
IRB and ILACUC approval
How do I know if I need IRB or ILACUC approval?
Your mentor and their lab will determine if your project necessitates an IRB or ILACUC approval. This determination should have been made at the application process. If your project has changed from the original proposed and funded application and you now need IRB or ILACUC approval, your mentor, lab coordinator or research assistant should submit the protocol to the appropriate approval body. You are responsible for all online or in-laboratory training to keep compliant with any proposed ammendments or protocols.
Where do I send my IRB/ILACUC approved protocol?
Please send your protocol approval notification to Bianca McArrell, Program Manager electronically, fax to 614.292.6226 or to 1068 Graves Hall. Failure to secure a necessary IRB or ILACUC protocol can result in funding problems.
My project has been denied by the IRB, now what?
Please contact Bianca McArrell, Program Manager as soon as possible electronically or at 614.292.2683. IRB approval is an essential tool for students to be successful in their projects and to be able to work towards completion. There are options besides returning your scholarship money, and the Office of Medical Student Research can help as best as possible.
Final Report
When is my final report due?
Your final report is due by 3pm EST ten (10) business days after the last day of the project as indicated by the funded application's cover page. You should have received an email (sent to the email indicated on your application's cover page) reminding you of a specific date. If you are still uncertain as to your final report's due date, please contact Bianca McArrell, Program Manager electronically or at 614.292.2683.
What is the format?
Visit the Current Research Scholar webpage for more information regarding final report formatting.
How long does the report need to be?
The length of the final report should be dictated first by your research and second by your mentor. The final report should be however long it needs to be in order to succinctly, clearly, and intelligently describe the background, topic area, methods, discussion and conclusions.
Who do I turn in my report to?
Final reports can be submitted electronically to Bianca McArrell, Program Manager, faxed to 614.292.6226 (not recommended for reports with images), or dropped off in 1170 Graves Hall during regular business hours.
Do you have sample final reports?
Final reports are specific to research proposals and experiments conducted by the students and their mentors. The Office of Medical Student Research does not have sample final reports made available to students.
