Day 1: Clinical Anatomy and Function, Modeling Spinal Cord Injury, Standards of Animal Care
Research introductions, veterinary perspectives, animal handling, chronic care and aseptic surgery will be covered.
Day 2 - 5 : Animal care, Spinal surgery, Anatomy, BBB testing, Research Goals
 |
Laboratory training will proceed with the close guidance of faculty and staff. Measurable outcomes in core competency areas ensure that all participants have ample opportunity to evaluate progress and proficiency. Discussions will focus on the goals of SCI research with an introduction to the evaluation of spinal cord injured persons, current research topics, and areas of participant interest. |
Day 6 and 7 : Weekend 1
Participants assist with animal care needs and participate in additional training sessions. Time will be available for informal discussions with faculty and staff and to explore the Columbus area. Please plan to stay for the weekend to take full advantage of the training program.
Day 8 – 10 : Thoracic and Cervical SCI Models, Histological Methods, Surgical techniques
|
Faculty and staff will demonstrate and guide participants in the preparation of appropriate injury models for different research questions. Participants will practice preparation of histological materials and extend surgical training in selected procedures. Presentations and discussions will cover mechanisms of secondary injury and repair and overview of the evolution of lesion pathology and pathophysiology. Participants will observe clinical evaluations of SCI individuals and be introduced to the personal side of SCI. |
