Humanism is a quality expected of every graduating medical student at the College of Medicine. Each spring, the College’s chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) recognizes those students who at the end of their third year have demonstrated exemplary attitudes and behaviors characteristic of the most humanistic physicians: Integrity, excellence, compassion, altruism, respect, empathy, and service. In keeping with the spirit of the Society, two faculty members are also inducted each year. The GHHS complements the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society by recognizing those students who excel not only in academic performance, but also in their attitudes toward patient care.
The process begins in January each year when a peer evaluation survey is sent out to all third-year medical students. Respondents are asked to rank in order up to three students from their class who best fit each of seven statements, ranging from “an exceptional interest in service to their community” to “whose honesty and integrity are above approach.” Additional comments are also encouraged to help in the selection process. A committee of students, staff, and faculty makes the final decision. The induction ceremony is held in the middle of April so that this honor may be included in the student’s Medical Student Performance Evaluation and in letters of recommendation.
New members then meet in the fall of their senior year to develop programs that exemplify humanistic attitudes. Creativity is strongly encouraged, and seed grants of up to $1,500 for innovative programs are available from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation.
