Summative (Cluster) Statements for MSPE: Class of 2009

Home > Residency Preparation > Summative (Cluster) Statements for MSPE: Class of 2009

PROCESS FOR 2007-08 MSPE

The national MSPE guidelines adopted in 2002 state that the Summary section of the MSPE should include a summative assessment of the student’s comparative performance in medical school, relative to his or her peers, including information about any school-specific categories used in differentiating among levels of student performance.

In order to facilitate the letter generation, student match counseling, and meet the national guidelines for MSPEs, we returned to clustering in 2006-07, having used it regularly prior to 2003.

We use adjectives for five groups which provide a reasonable estimate of that student’s potential for residency training.  A template paragraph with explanation of the adjective will be provided in the MSPE as well as a table in the appendices indicating the various categories.

Point Calculation

Method:

  • Med 1 and 2 = 12 points each
    • 10 for IP/ISP (score%/10)
    • 1 each for PCM/PD
      • 1 = Honors, 0.9 = Letter, 0.8 = Satisfactory
  • Med 3 = 23 points
    • 4 each for OB, Surg, IM, Peds
      • 4 = Honors, 2 = Letter, 0 = Satisfactory, -1 = U with remediation
    • 2 each for Ambulatory, Neuro, Psych
      • 2 = Honors, 1 = Letter, 0 = Satisfactory, -1 = U with remediation
    • 1 for Med 3 elective
      • 1 = Honors, 0.5 = Letter, 0 = Satisfactory, -1 = U with remediation
      • Any elective graded only S/U will not count toward the final point total and a student will show 22 points for Med 3
  • MSPE letters are submitted based on Med 1-3 points only
  • Med 4 = 1-2 points per month (12 points total)
    • 2 points for each DOC
      • 2 = Honors, 1 = Letter, 0 = Satisfactory, -1 = U with remediation
    • 1 point for each elective
      • 1 = Honors, 0.5 = Letter, 0 = Satisfactory, -1 = U with remediation
  • Final graduation honors (summa cum laude, magna cum laude, cum laude) are determined based on Med 1-4 points

Citations for poor professionalism are not currently able to be incorporated in the computer method available to generate the clusters.  If a citation is present, the student is automatically placed in the next lower cluster.
