Visitor’s
Welcome and New Business—Patti Fertel
Welcome
from Dr. Stone and an introduction from Patti Fertel. She is the
counselor for all of us and serves all of the medical students and MD/PhD and
Med LOA’s. She has visited with 18% of the first years and approximately 35% of
med II’s. Anxiety is the most common reason along with depression and academic
issues stemming from emotional or personal/family issues. It is very important for those students
who have sickness or other time consuming issues as soon as possible before
more problems arise. Many students
have relationship/ others issues that require tests to be postponed. Which She is a social worker, counselor,
and therapist. She does not do
testing or prescribe medication but has great anonymous referrals. There are even people not affiliated
with the school. ADD is very
common in medical school and about 60 students have been tested. Many of them are being treated and have
improved. It is really great.
She
is located in 061 Meiling and would like to see more students who she could
help.
Student
council could be helpful by being aware of the things that students can receive
help with and referring or encouraging them to get help.
Dr.
Stone: 292-5126 is a number for
the associate Deans office and every night there is an assoc. Dean on
call. What are the issues for
which you should call. Really
anything very urgent or when we just don’t know what to do. We should call to talk.

- Review of
weather policy sent to all professors/program directors: “In the event
that the University closes you should not attempt to go to a class or a
clinical assignment. This applies to Med 1–4 students. The COM
will be closed if the University closes, and there will be no staff in
any of the offices.”
- Two-week
rotations: two weeks is not enough time to properly evaluate a student
- There may be
the possibility to split up a rotation as long as it is not team
intensive.
- ECC: Review of
MedPATH program, continued proposal of combined PCM/PD curriculum. We will be learning the History
and physical during the first part of first year. They aren’t going to be added
“too” much.
