 Reference Letters

Submit Reference Letters ONLY through the AMCAS Letter Service.

More information about this process is available on the AMCAS students web site.

  • DO NOT send reference letters directly to the College of Medicine.

  • If your undergraduate advising office uses VirtualEvals, these will be downloaded by AMCAS and made available to us.  If you have questions, please contact your undergraduate advising office for details.

Reference Letter Status:

  • You are responsible for monitoring receipt of your reference letters through the AMCAS Letter Service.

Reference Letter Requirement

  • A minimum of two letters from faculty who have taught and graded your course work is required.

  • If your school provides a committee letter, this is accepted in lieu of the two academic letters.

  • Additional letters from individuals who are able to speak to your abilities and unique characteristics are also encouraged.  For example:  community and volunteer service, clinical exposure, research experience.
  • The average number of letters submitted is three.  It is advised that the number of letters be limited to no more than four or five.

  • Reference letters must be signed.

File Review:

  • Review of your application for interview is not dependent upon receipt of reference letters.

  • Reference letters must be available through AMCAS prior to your on-campus interview.

Confidentiality:  Letters of recommendation or evaluations are considered confidential unless you specifically state that you do not waive the right of access to such statements.  It is your responsibility to inform your letter writers whether we may receive and maintain your letters or evaluations in confidence.

Reapplicants:  Reference letters must be submitted to the AMCAS Letter Service each application year.  Reference letters from previous applications are NOT transferred from one application year to the next.  Letters written in support of the current application carry more influence with the Admissions Committee than do letters written in previous years for prior applications.  One or two new letters submitted on your behalf are expected.
