The cost of attendance represents an estimate of what the College of Medicine, in cooperation with the University, has determined to be reasonable expenses that a student might incur while attending school for an academic year. The cost of attendance is significant because it limits that amount of total financial aid a student can receive to meet their expenses.
The Office of Student Financial Services strongly encourages students to determine their own cost of attendance (expenses) at the beginning of EVERY school year by creating a budget. By doing so, students will be able to determine if their expenses are greater or less than our estimated cost of attendance (see chart below). Further general information about medical school expenses and budgeting can be found at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).
If after completing a budget you determine that your expenses are greater than our cost of attendance, please email our office at medfinaid@osumc.edu. We can then discuss what, if any, possibilities exists for increasing your cost of attendance to allow for additional loan funding. When you email, please attach a copy of your monthly budget.
As the chart below illustrates, non-ohio residents are charged a higher tuition. It is possible to become an Ohio resident as a student. The two most common ways our students obtain Ohio residency include: married students whose spouse gains Ohio employment making self-sustaining income can apply for in-state residency as early as their first year of medical school. Unmarried students are eligible to apply once they have financially supported themselves in Ohio for one full year. For more details and other possible ways on how to obtain Ohio residency, please visit the Registrar's residency web page.
