Welcome to Prospective ResidentsOur academic, research-oriented institution has a long tradition of training leaders in surgery. Our residency program graduates have achieved prominence and success in community practice and at major academic institutions throughout the United States. In the Department of Surgery, we share a common goal: to provide a setting conducive to learning. We are committed to providing an environment both supportive and challenging, so that you can fulfill your highest potential and assume a position of leadership in surgery. Here you will take progressive responsibility as an integral member of our surgical team, delivering state-of-the-art patient care, teaching medical students, and contributing to innovations in medicine through translational research and clinical outcomes studies. Through a broad range of conference and clinical experiences, you will learn to function as a well-qualified, independent specialist in the dynamic health-care environment of today and tomorrow. We believe the most important assets of an institution are its people. At Ohio State, we share a deep personal commitment and devotion to patients and members of the health-care team. We welcome you and hope you will consider joining our close-knit family of residents, fellows, and faculty. Patient Care Provided by Residents
General surgery resident Mary Dillhoff says residents in the Department of Surgery at Ohio State University Medical Center receive outstanding training and experience in caring for patients. “With the number and breadth of cases you get here, you will leave the program very well equipped,” says Dr. Dillhoff, who received her medical degree at the University of Cincinnati. “If you are a hard worker and truly interested in taking care of the patients, you will be amply rewarded with great cases. There are plenty to go around, and you’ll see every possible kind. You will get the very best possible education.” Dr. Dillhoff says the program stands out for another reason: because of the character of the staff. “You have truly good people working here. I wouldn’t choose another group of people or go anywhere else. I love this place. I can take great care of my patients, my attendings respect me, my coworkers are fantastic, and I enjoy coming here every day.” Seventy residents and fellows participate in the department’s nine residency programs. House staff treat patients in the outpatient clinics and on the surgical service. Early clinical training broadens knowledge of general surgical concepts, patient management issues, and state-of-the-art surgical procedures. Residents assume progressive responsibilities based upon individual skill level, experience, and knowledge. Attending physicians provide supervision and conduct teaching rounds regularly. While a full-time attending surgeon is on call each night, resident teams and medical students staff the major services. A resident will have participated in 1,000 to 1,200 operative cases upon completion of the program. ACGME-Accredited Residencies

Teaching
General surgery resident Bryan Fisher has good things to say about learning and teaching in the Department of Surgery at Ohio State University Medical Center. “You will be trained to be a good surgeon here,” says Dr. Fisher, who earned his medical degree at the University of Wisconsin, in Madison. “I feel very pleased and fortunate to be in such a great learning environment. The attending physicians encourage the residents to think and make decisions on their own. We have excellent resources and amazing operative experience, with ample opportunity to handle very complex cases as a junior resident.” Dr. Fisher values the many teaching opportunities he finds at Ohio State’s Medical Center. “I think it’s essential to pass on my skills and knowledge to students, residents, and other clinicians.” He also appreciates the supportive environment. “The attendings are like family,” he says. “This is a very collegial environment, where they understand the rigors we go through and are always trying to improve surgical training. The attendings are eager to teach the residents, and we’re just as eager to learn. I love this place.” Residents in the Department of Surgery are dedicated to learning and teaching advanced surgical techniques and procedures, and assume a major responsibility for the clinical education of medical students. The integrated and affiliated institutions of the program provide clinical resources for graduate and undergraduate surgical education. The full-time attending faculty of the Department of Surgery are based at Ohio State University Medical Center, the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, the Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital, University Hospital East, and Columbus Children’s Hospital. Clinical faculty participate in the educational programs at Mount Carmel West Hospital and Riverside Methodist Hospital. Ohio State’s Medical Center and the Department of Surgery host a variety of forums and seminars, where highly skilled clinicians and researchers share their expertise and advance the profession. The extensive collection of the Prior Health Sciences Library includes the papers and memorabilia of Dr. Robert M. Zollinger, the internationally respected surgeon and former department chairman. The Department of Surgery’s Larry C. Carey Learning Center provides surgical residents and medical students with library, computer, and conference facilities. Divisional libraries supplement the collection of the health sciences library. A comprehensive range of support services, including a new call room suite, a free palm pilot, and laundry facilities, is provided to residents. Research
General surgery resident Meghan Forster says the research experience in the Department of Surgery at Ohio State University Medical Center provides residents with a valuable opportunity to broaden their skills and deepen their understanding. “The process of generating an idea, testing a hypothesis, and formulating a conclusion teaches you to evaluate research literature more effectively and incorporate the data generated by research into your own clinical practice,” says Dr. Forster, who received her medical degree at the University of Cincinnati. “Having the experience of doing your own research will make you a better, more well-rounded physician, whether you’re going into academic medicine or private practice. “We have excellent facilities and all the resources needed to do high-powered research. I’m getting a lot out of the research experience and bettering myself and my future.” Research is a vital component of the Department of Surgery’s mission. The department’s research efforts are focused on key areas of interest that promise to yield significant results in the understanding of disease and the improvement of clinical care. The department’s Office of Surgical Research, under the direction of Chandan K. Sen, Ph.D., promotes interdisciplinary research activity and the integration of clinical and basic science research. FundingThe department’s stature and the reputation of its researchers and clinicians enable it to garner significant funding from private industry and federal sources, such as the National Institutes of Health. The department offers seed grants for clinical and laboratory research to faculty and resident investigators. Major Areas of Research
