Nancy Lundeen: Hi, everyone. My name is Nancy Lundeen, and I'm just so excited about your interest in the OSU internship program. I completed my clinical internship in 2021-2022, and I was in the adult psychopathology track. And I'm currently a postdoc here at OSU because I loved my experience so much. [Video of Nancy Lundeen seated in her office with a grey cabinet in the background along with a degree on the shelf behind her.] So I'll just tell you today a little bit about my experience as an intern. I was in the adult psychopathology track, and last year, when I did my internship, there weren't yet separate tracks with the adult psychopathology. I had an EPICENTER concentration, which was two days a week in the EPICENTER, and then just the Early Psychosis Intervention Center. One day a week in Mood and Anxiety and Mindfulness rotation, and then one research day, one day of didactics, and other elective experiences. Something that I really loved about my experience at the OSU internship is just the emphasis on your training, on learning, on professional development. There's just so many different parts of the program that are set in place to really help you to thrive and learn as much as you can, and to also personalize the experience and really make sure that you're feeling good and you have a good sense of well-being camaraderie with your internship group, too. I just love how the supervisors and Doctor Herman, the internship director, just everybody's really constantly listening feedback from the interns, just checking in as to how the didactics were, how different parts of the program are going, if people are feeling like they have a manageable workload. We'll have quarterly meetings with Doctor Carmen, the internship director, and then we have regular meetings with our supervisors just to check in and provide any feedback as well. And we also, part of kind of the emphasis on professional development learning shows up in professional development funds that we have. So we actually have a set-aside amount of money that you can use to spend on therapy manuals, and on different kinds of clinical resources, or online trainings that would be useful for you. You also have professional development days, which you can use, which are separate from vacation days, where you can go to a conference or you can go to graduation, things like that. And so all of those things, I feel like, are so helpful for your development and training. You'll also have a mentor who is separate from one of your clinical supervisors. And so that's just a really helpful way, too, to get some extra advice and support about professional development, to talk about your next steps are, and also just to talk about how things are going for your internship. The next thing I want to talk about is just the program's flexibility. And so this comes out in a lot of different ways, especially in the elective experiences. Throughout my time, even though I was primarily in the Early Psychosis Center and then also Anxiety and Mindfulness for my rotations, I got some elective experiences as well. So, one of them was getting some substance use experience. I went once a week to Talbot Hall for a few months, where I worked with Mike Vilensky and got some training in motivational interviewing. So, I helped to co-lead a group with individuals who were recovering from substance use difficulties. And then I also got to shadow some individual sessions, and watch Mike Vilensky implement these different motivational interview techniques, and get some practice through didactics with him as well. That was a really, really great experience for me. I also got an elective experience shadowing the EPICENTER psychiatrist on the inpatient unit. So I could see a little bit higher of severity in terms of acute psychotic experiences and symptoms that people were going through, a little bit more severe than what you'd see in the outpatient therapy clinic. And then finally, I did a Cognitive Processing Therapy for Trauma elective, where I attended CPT consultation meetings with the STRIVE team with Craig Bryan. And I was able to go through the online training for CPT and then actually administer CPT for one of my patients who was experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms in my Mood and Anxiety rotation. So all of those elective experiences were just one example of the program's flexibility and how you can really tailor the program to your training goals. Another thing I want to mention is just how cool it is that the Med Center is really growing and expanding. And so this applies to the Psychiatry Department, but also across the board and the Med Center. So it's just so cool to see so many new people being hired and so many people's expertise from different areas really growing. The internship itself is growing. It started out a few years ago, just as two health interns, and now is expanding more and more into different parts of adult psychopathology and adding just more opportunities, too. And then, I just want to talk a little bit about the kind of culture and atmosphere here. As you've probably heard before, everybody is just really nice and just really cares about each other. And that is a genuine kind of attitude around here. And I think, too, something that's nice and different from a lot of other places is the cross-discipline relationships and how Psychiatry and Psychology really get along here. We actually, as Psychology interns, help to provide CBT supervision for the residents, the Psychiatry residents. And that's just a really great experience to get supervision, which is pretty rare in internship, to actually be the supervisor, and also just to get to know another field and get to interact with the residents. Lastly, I just want to put a plug for Columbus. Columbus is wonderful; It's a great city; It's relatively affordable. Your internship stipend will go a lot further than on the East or the West Coast. Not too much traffic, and there's just great neighborhoods here. There's amazing food, lots of different kinds of cuisines to choose from, and lots of green spaces, places to hike. There's a beautiful river trail that goes throughout the city. It's just a really wonderful place to live during your internship year and beyond. Thats all I'll say, but I just wish you all the best of luck.
