Nicholas J. K. Breitborde, Ph.D., ABPP: EPICENTER is a specialized clinical program that serves two groups of individuals: adolescents and young adults who've recently started to experience symptoms of psychosis, and even younger adolescents and young adults who are showing the early warning signs of a burgeoning psychotic disorder. He is seated infront of windows.] EPICENTER opened at the Ohio State University in January of 2016, and since then, has become one of the largest clinical programs for people with first-episode psychosis in the United States. [Video on screen Montage of the buildings and students and teachers at work at The Ohio State University] Psychotic disorders like schizophrenia or mood disorders with psychotic features are some of the most disabling and challenging illnesses that a human being can experience. [Video pans back to Nicolas J. K. [Video pans back to Nicholas Brietborde] [Video of Nicholas Brietborde engaged in a conversation with 3 other people who are sitting with him in what appears to be a therapy session] What we can do at EPICENTER is we can change that. We can get them early access to care when the disease is most malleable. We can make sure that they get the services that they need and help them return back to the life that they want. We have a wonderful multidisciplinary group of providers that work together with a shared goal of helping people and families who have been touched by psychosis. [Video pans back to Nicholas Brietborde] [Video on screen A girl is plotting on a Time vs Anxiety graph drawing a positive linear coorelation. A second video shows a psychiatrist talking to a patient.] A coordinated specialty care team involves five key services: case management, medication management, family education and support, some form of psychotherapy, and support services around helping people return back to work and school. We've partnered with five community mental health centers throughout the state of Ohio to help them establish their own EPICENTER team. [Video pans back to Nicholas Breitborde] [Video on screen A student working on a core components of psychosis slide show. Another video shows a woman working on her computer.] It has been incredibly encouraging to see that at these community-based sites, they've not only been able to learn and master the interventions we do at EPICENTER, but their participants are getting back to work and school at similar rates to what we see at our site. [Video on screen A second man sitting at his laptop wearing a blue and red plaid shirt is speaking.] Their symptoms are improving at similar rates. At our site, we can test and evaluate, and validate new and exciting interventions.
