Frequently Asked Questions

Does The Ohio State University MSTP accept international applicants?

Unfortunately, we do not accept international students. We only accept U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

Can I also be considered for MD-only and/or PhD-only if I'm not competitive for the MSTP?

Yes.​ During the application process each applicant will be asked if they'd like to be considered for MD-only and/or PhD-only. If the MSTP decides not to interview the applicant, the application will be immediately sent to the program(s) indicated by the applicant.

Can I apply after matriculating to Ohio State’s College of Medicine?

Yes. We do offer OSU Medical School students the opportunity to apply to the MSTP via the Advanced Training Applicant process.

When do first-year students begin the MSTP?

First-year students begin with a laboratory rotation in Summer Session (June). Exceptions will be made for applicants who will not graduate until summer semester/quarter.

What PhD programs can I choose as part of the MSTP?

We have three Core graduate programs: Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program, Neuroscience Graduate Studies Program, and the Biomedical Engineering Graduate Program. We do partner with a number of additional PhD programs across OSU's campus. For a current list of our partnering graduate programs, please visit this page​. If your research interest falls outside of the Core graduate programs and you'd like some guidance, please contact the MSTP office​ to discuss additional opportunities.

Application and additional materials

How many graduate programs may I select on the Secondary application?

You may select up to all of our graduate program partners; however, it would be in your best interest to be thoughtful about your selections. These programs include our core graduate programs (Biomedical Engineering Graduate Program, Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program, and the Neuroscience Graduate Studies Program) and our affiliate graduate programs (Biophysics, Chemistry, Microbiology, and Public Health).

Are official transcripts required as part of my application?

Yes, The Ohio State University Graduate Admissions Office requires all applicants to submit official transcripts. Transcripts should be sent directly to the MSTP office.

How can I check the status of my application?

Applicants should contact the MSTP office (mdphd@osumc.edu​) to check the status of their application.


How many applicants are invited to interview?

We typically invite between 45-55 applicants (10-15 per session)

How are the interview sessions structured?

Thursday – MSTP Overview, College of Medicine overview, curriculum review and dinner with current MSTP students
Friday – Faculty and student interviews, current student panel, Medical Center tour, interview with MSTP Leadership, dinner at the home of the MSTP Director
Saturday – breakfast with current students, brief tour of the surrounding Columbus area, depart

How many interviews will I have?

Our applicants interview with three faculty, 2 current students, and our MSTP Director/MSTP Associate Director.

When will I receive an admissions decision?

We do offer rolling admissions decisions for a select few. All other interviewed applicants are notified after our Ranking Meeting (held in mid February).
