’90, Joseph M. Baloga, MD 1964-2012 

 

Dr. Joseph M. Baloga, age 47, of Laguna Hills, Calif. and formerly of Shavertown, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, March 31, 2012 at his home. Born May 7, 1964, in Kingston, Joseph was the son of the late John M. and F. Patricia Gaj Baloga. He grew up in Swoyersville and Shavertown. As a youth, Joe was a member of Boy Scout Troop 233 and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated with honors from Dallas Senior High School and was active in the drama curriculum, including playing the lead role in the school drama "Harvey." Joe was an active member of St. Therese's Church, Shavertown, where he was an altar server and lector. Diagnosed with Type I diabetes at the age of 7, Joe dedicated his life to helping fellow diabetics with their disease. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BS in Microbiology from Penn State University. He received his Doctorate in Medicine in 1990 from The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Joe completed his internship and residency in 1993 at University of Rochester Medical Center and was Board Certified in Internal Medicine as well as Endocrinology and Metabolism. He completed his fellowship at The University of California, San Diego, and The San Diego Veterans Medical Center, contributing to important early research on insulin resistance. Dr. Baloga remained in California as a practicing physician in Santa Cruz and South Orange County. He specialized in Type I and Type II diabetes and treatment of growth hormone deficiencies at South Orange County Endocrinology. Dr. Baloga was listed in the US News and World Reports ranking as a national expert in his field and was highly regarded for his compassion and professionalism. While at home in Laguna Hills, Joe enjoyed gardening, gourmet cooking, caring for his pets and traveling. Joseph was a member of St. Nicholas Church, Laguna Woods, Calif. Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were an infant sister, Patricia, and brother-in-law, Troy E. Connor. Surviving are his brothers, John and wife, Pat, Rochester, N.Y.; Stephen and wife, Patti, Harrisburg; Thomas and wife, Gayle, Goshen, N.Y.; David and wife, Donna, Dallas; sister, Alice Connor, York. He will be sadly missed by numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces and cousins, as well as his dear friend, Kenneth R. Wells​.
